What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is waste that has the potential to harm humans or the environment, whether immediately or in the future. Recently, more waste has been newly classified as hazardous, and so many companies are finding that they are having to deal with legislation surrounding disposal for the first time.

There are 4 main categories of hazardous waste:

  • Flammable – any liquid or material that can be ignited and that will spread fire quickly, including empty containers, are classed as hazardous waste.
  • Corrosive – Corrosive materials can be a danger to other construction materials and to humans, with many chemicals posing potential hazards to skin and eyes.
  • Reactive – Anything that can explode if exposed to heat or if they are damaged, for example pressurised gas canisters or fireworks.
  • Toxic – These materials pose a threat to health and to the environment if not disposed of correctly and can include pesticides, petrol, turpentine and biocides.

Hazardous waste is heavily regulated, and it is important that any waste that falls into these categories are dealt with and disposed of properly. In most cases you will need professional hazardous waste removal to step in and help.

What are the main reasons for hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is surprisingly common in most business environments, and as a company you are liable for your waste and how it is disposed of, with large fines if you do not dispose of them correctly. Hazardous waste requires strict and careful management and removal, and more often than not you will need hazardous chemical disposal companies to come and guide you and your business through the removal process. Some examples of common business hazardous waste are:

  • Fluorescent Tubes – These are used in a wide variety of businesses and are a popular lighting choice. However, they contain mercury which is highly toxic and can contaminate the environment and water supply if not removed and disposed of correctly.
  • Waste Electronics (WEEE) – As your company upgrades and gets rid of old technology, you need to be aware of how to handle Waste electrical and electronic equipment. Electronics contain components that give off toxic fumes and help to contribute to air pollution.
  • Cleaning chemicals – chemicals that are used for cleaning, as well as photo development, are often underestimated as they are easy to get hold of. However, large quantities of these chemicals can pose potential risks to health and to the environment. You will need hazardous chemical disposal companies to come and dispose of them, as well as to give advice on how to store and handle them.

Whilst there are many more examples, these are just a few to show that hazardous waste can come from surprising places and you need to ensure that these are disposed of correctly and carefully, to keep employees and the environment safe.
