Important Legislation Change - Gypsum
Recent research, commissioned by the Environment Agency (EA), has revealed that any quantity of Gypsum/Sulphate bearing waste has the potential, within a biodegradable Landfill, to generate Hydrogen Sulphide.
With effect then from 1st April 2009, the Environment Agency (EA) has now published its final position regarding the regulation of Gypsum bearing wastes. The previous guideline, allowing general non hazardous wastes, containing a mix of up to 10% Gypsum to be Landfilled, has now been revised. Instead, the 10% limit has been removed and no longer applies. This requires all businesses, particularly those involved in the Construction, Demolition or Building Maintenance sectors, to review their procedures concerning Gypsum based waste product(s). More details can be found on the Environment Agency Website.
The new rules require Gypsum bearing products to be segregated and placed within a separate container for either recycling or treatment prior to disposal within a dedicated mono cell within a suitably approved Landfill site. It is therefore critically important that no contamination occurs within any of your other waste or recyclate streams, as this would involve additional, and costly, recovery actions.
Here at Neales Waste Management, we are already able to offer a wide variety of recycling services, including Gypsum based products, as a more cost and environmentally effective alternative to Landfilling. We would be delighted to discuss any specific requirements with you, or indeed provide any other information you may require, at your convenience.
