Quercia generates electricity
Quercia, landfill and recycling centre based in Chorley and part of the Neales Waste Management group of companies, is always looking for recycling opportunities. At the beginning of 2009, planning was submitted and granted for a gas utilisation plant for waste gas, specifically methane (one of the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming) produced by landfill activities. This gas is currently burnt off via what is called “gas flaring” but will in future be harnessed and power a gas turbine thereby generating an electrical charge which can then be fed back to the national grid. This is a large scale project for the company and has taken 18 months from submission of the planning application to full installation of the infrastructure. Electricity will be fed back to the national grid starting June 2010.
